Sommelier Cellar - Share something special

Fontanafredda, our producer of the month for January

Every month we choose a producer that we think deserves special recognition for the quality of its wine, and the aesthetics, history, character and ethics of its operation. This month we’re pleased to recognize Fontanafredda, a historic wine estate in the hills of Piedmont, northern Italy.

Representatives from the estate were at tastings in London last year, and we were fortunate to sample their produce and hear more about their story. The Fontanafredda estate was bought by Victor Emanuel II, the first King of Italy (known for his lustrous facial hair), in 1858, and begun wine production twenty years later. Since then, it hasn't looked back.

Poetic beauty. The vineyards lie on rounded hills in the Langhe region of Piedmont, home of the distinguished Barolo wine variety. The renowned Italian poet, Cesare Pavese, who was born close to the Langhe, wrote, “Three noses is what you need for drinking Barolo wine…”

Not just a winemaker, a commune. About 20 families live in the village, contributing to wine production and welcoming visitors, just as in the 19th century. The village even has its own small theatre.
